Raynaud’s Disease is a disease that affects the blood vessel circulation of the hands and feet. This is caused by over-stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system that is responsible for increasing heart rate, constriction of blood vessels and raising blood pressure during the flight or fight response. Raynaud’s phenomenon will react similarly, but is due to a secondary cause such as injury, frostbite, surgical complications, or autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. This usually occurs when a patient is exposed to cold or emotional stress. When this over-stimulation occurs, blood vessels of the hands and feet narrow, decreasing blood flow to and from the fingers and toes, leading to a sequence of color changes in the hands and/or feet beginning with pink, blue and then eventually white, and can be associated with numbness. Because of this lack of blood flow, the hands and feet are depleted of essential nutrients, oxygen and heat, which can lead to cellular damage.
Chiropractic care for Raynaud’s include adjustments of the spine to increase and restore proper communication between the nerves of the spinal cord with the rest of the body, specifically the nervous system with the hands and feet, far infrared sauna to help increase circulation in the body, nutritional counseling to ensure the body is receiving the necessary nutrients to function properly, and exercise counseling to promote vascular flow. As with most conditions, Raynaud’s is specific to each individual’s case and it is important that a thorough history be taken at the Chiropractic office to ensure proper treatment.
