IT Band Syndrome
Classic presentation of ITB syndrome is lateral pain or pain along the outside of the knee that progresses gradually increases over a course of time anywhere from a few days to weeks. Most commonly it is seen in runners, more specifically downhill runners, and joggers. This is due to the constant flexion of the knee at approximately 30-40 degrees during these types of running, which causes the IT band to rub against the lateral epicondyle producing pain and discomfort.
Chiropractic management typically includes PIR or post-isometric relaxation stretching of the IT band to release tension and promote elongation of fibers in the band. Alterations in movement patterns will come into play as runners will need to make modifications in their exercise routine to avoid further aggravation to the IT band. Instrument-assisted soft tissue work performed on the IT band itself as well as the surrounding muscular attachment sites such as the tensor fascia latae and gluteus maximus muscles may also aid in relief of trigger points, as well as pelvic adjusting to promote proper alignment of the body during movement.
