Fibromyalgia

Commonly seen in more women than men, Fibromyalgia presents as generalized musculoskeletal pain in 11 or more trigger areas on both sides of the body.  Symptoms include the sensation of being achy, stiff and tired.  Common sites of pain include, but are not limited to, regions of the suboccipital area, lower cervical spine, upper trapezius muscle, supraspinatus muscle, gluteal muscles, and medial fat pad of the knee.  Associated symptoms include headache, sleep interruption, paresthesia or numbess/tingling, fatigue and stiffness.

Currently, there is no definitive cause of Fibromyalgia, but it is proposed that disturbances of normal REM or rapid eye movement during the sleep cycle may play a role in those who suffer with this condition.  Treatment varies from patient to patient and will depend on severity of symptoms.  Chiropractic care can offer a wide range of conservative approaches ranging from oral supplementation recommendations, nutritional counseling, exercise protocols, physical modalities, and stress management to help manage symptoms of Fibromyalgia.
